STATEMENT OF APCU CHAIRMAN AND PRESIDENT RAUL L. LAMBINO ON THE DEROGATORY PORTRAYAL OF FILIPINOS BY CHINA DAILY

The Association for Philippines–China Understanding (APCU) firmly rejects any form of content, communication, or conduct that resorts to ridicule, stereotyping, or dehumanization of any nationality. The AI-Generated contents released by China Daily regarding the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award, showed offensive portrayals of the Filipino people. These publications undermine the standards of respect, civility, and constructive dialogue, particularly at a time when meaningful engagements are essential to preserving peace and understanding.

The recent commemoration of the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea has once again reinforced disagreements on legal and political positions on maritime disputes. However, these disagreements must remain within the bounds of respectful dialogue and should never descend into mockery, racism, and diminish the dignity of an entire people. APCU does not tolerate expressions that do not contribute to peaceful resolution and instead advocates for responsible and respectful discourse.

Throughout this time, APCU has remained committed to promoting friendship and understanding between the Filipino and Chinese peoples through academic and cultural people-to-people exchanges. We have witnessed that lasting relationships are built not on provocation, but on open dialogue, respect, and appreciation of our shared humanity.

We therefore call on all media organizations and institutions to exercise greater responsibility in the creation and dissemination of public content. Media organizations have the duty to uphold the dignity of all nationalities and to avoid narratives that perpetuate hatred and harmful stereotypes.

APCU reaffirms its steadfast commitment to promoting friendship between the Philippines and China through sincere dialogues, mutual respect, and understanding that comes from the heart.
